Have you looked in Chapter 17 of Bowditch? (Available online.) One
reason I'm a bit vague about what might or not be in the current
Nautical Almanac is that my one stop shop has a five year almanac and
much else besides - including amplitude determination.
The book I am referring to is: "The Complete On-board Celestial
Navigator" by George Bennett. New edition coming out soon. Has
instructions including worked examples. Sight reduction tables.
Prediction and identification tables. Blank forms to be photocopied as
needed. Plus much else, such as amplitudes. The new edition will
include formulae for direct sight reduction, azimuth determination,
etc; using a calculator. Everything you need in the one handy (and
weather resistant!) book. Modestly priced and available through Amazon.
Check it out.
