One of my other hobbies is casting bullets, and I’ve been using an Excel spreadsheet to calculate alloy properties when mixing different types of lead. When the spreadsheet was first introduced in the late 2000's it was slicker than sliced bread.
Fast forward to 2026, and most of my use was on a mobile device. The interface was starting to feel clunky and outdated. I have zero coding experience, but with the advent of AI, I figured it should be pretty easy to turn this old spreadsheet into a mobile friendly app.
I paid my $20/month Claude subscription and started experimenting. A couple of days later, I had a bug-free version of my lead alloy calculator. It can be saved to a smartphone and run with or without an internet connection.
Great success!!
That got me started, and since then I’ve been converting more of the spreadsheets I still use into apps, shooting and dog-training logbooks, specialized calculators, and other tools.
Peter’s recent post about his spreadsheet got me wondering: Is anyone else updating their old navigation spreadsheets to optimize them for mobile use with the help of AI? Or are there spreadsheets you know of that could benefit from some app treatment?
Maybe something that fills a niche that isn’t currently served by another app?
