As I said, I use a Davis artificial al horizon, with blue and orange plastic shields, glass panels long since broken, with water in the dish. Easy to clean up, just wipe dry. The baby oil you mention is obviously less likely to ripple, but might be a bit of a mess to remove, that is to clean the container, assuming one wanted to, after use. I should get back to using the thing, I could probably stand the practice. Unfortunately it's cold and a bit of snow here, so comfort outweighs other considerations. Going to the beach in April, where one gets to use a real sea horizon. Best.
