    You can get really thick gear oil (SAE 80 wt or even SAE 140 wt). Stuff is really thick, almost like honey. I used to use it for an AH before I got a bubble sextant. Would take quite a breeze to put ripples in it.

    I found "baby oil" ie mineral oil a clear distillate of paraffin oil
    but easily obtainable in pharmacists,a bit better than water as it is
    a little more resistant to ripples (is that due to viscosity?). I pour
    it in to a black plastic tray.
