I would certainly try it. Very many ripples would make the sight impossible. It doesn't take many.
If I am using a bowl of water as an artificial horizon from my living room, just having my wife walking in the kitchen sets up enough ripples as to make the sight impossible. I have decided that having a good relationship is more important than a good celestial sight...so I try not to say, "Honey, can you stop walking for a moment?"
I have discovered that no matter now nicely I word that request, it never ends very well. It is always taken as a criticism of my wife's weight.
