I was at Wellington airporty on opening day. I was on the other side of the runway to the cameraman. It was a long time ago and I cannot remember the incidents although I must have seen then because I am sure there was family discussion about then afterwards. I vaguely recall USAF jets with their afterburners on.
Getting off topic but Wellington has an undeserved weather reputation. There can be horrible weather at the north and south ends of the country but here in Wellington as we enjoy the fine weather we say "'what was the fuss about". It is May and the winter solstice is approaching yet the temperature is a balmy 20°C with blue skies with no wind. I am sure that Wellington's weather has changed over the years. Global warming?
AFAIK the only major incident involving civilan aircraft was a Vickers Viscount sliding of the south end of the runway and stopping on the embankment.. There was no major damage and no injuries.
David P have you seen the photo of the shadow of a vulcan over the Kingston Flyer steam locomotive down south in NZ? I think it was taken in the 1970s. The photo was IIRC hung on the wall a a base in the UK. I have seen the photo in a railway magazine but cannot find it online. The magazines are in storage in the garage so one day maybe I should try to find the photo.
