Re: An azimuth nomogram: what's under the hood?

What is fascinating about nomograms is that they are very simple to understand and use, but their design takes you into an obscure and deep branch of mathematics.  The theory of nomography was developed mainly in France, Russia, and Poland.

Attached is one from the February 1974 Sky & Telescope devised by Maurice Bruce Stewart of Willamette University.  It is like the one Tony and Sean posted, but simplified (intended for photographers of sunrises).  Note that the “angle from east” and “latitude” scales are on a circle rather than parabola.

A recent book by H. A. Evesham, The History and Development of Nomography (Docent Press), covers the field in great depth and is available via Amazon.

    Roger
