Good observations without a clock were made since the beginning of astronomy until 
the appearance of good clocks (beginning of 17th century I suppose.)

But I am not very familiar with Indian astronomy. What kind of observations are you talking about?
What is on display  in this ancient observatory?

Myself, I've seen two ancient observatories: one in Samarkand (Uzbekistan in 
Middle Asia) of Ulugh Beg. It contains the remains of his enormous sextant
(118 feet radius!). 

Another is in Beijin, but all they have on display is few instruments made by 
European Jesuits for the emperor,
and these instruments seem to be copies of Tycho Brahe's instruments made 
following the description in his book. (His original instruments
did not survive). I doubt that these instruments were ever actually used by the Chinese.

So what did you see in India?

Ancient Observatories:  I have visited some in India and have always been 
interested in finding how they can make good observations without a clock and 
what system do they record the star positions?? Any ideas where I can get 
this kind of linformation??
