In Antoine's postings, and those from several others, the degree symbol comes across as an empty square; presumably a symbol that my computer fails to understand. But at least, it's obvious what is intended, so no ambiguity results. He wrote- "in my last post, actually the degree symbol ° is a symbol which I cannot get to show up properly when published on the web ... while the arc minute symbol ' apparently seems to perform OK in this respect." I used to spell out degrees as "deg", but following useful advice which arrived via Navlist I have learned to produce the proper º symbol. However, I think the sequence may vary between different keyboards, depending on whether there's a separate numerical keypad area. In my cheapo Dell laptop, there isn't such a separate keypad. In my case, the recipe is this. Holding down both Fn and Alt keys, press in turn J O 7 (note, that was letter-O, not number-0). On releasing the Fn and Alt keys, a º symbol magically pops up. º look! there it is again! º. How and why this works, I couldn't say; but it does, for me.
