Re your "you call that living", might you ever have tried, not likely I think, living on the road, as a job shopping Piping Designer, it beat working steady for a living I think, back in the day when engineering drawings were made with pencils and triangles, or maybe "drafting machines", which I sometimes used, but never really liked.
A very long time ago, I was located not all that far from you and Paul, in Oakland and Berkley, whilst in part, sojourning at the old Shell Oil Refinery at Martinez, and or design offices in downtown Oakland.
I'm to far away for coffee, though an engineer type nephew resides in San Jose, but we could always swap lies, tall tales or something.
