Perhaps a bit off-point, but thinking back to when I was a kid living in Brooklyn, N.Y., I used to rent bicycles, didn't have one of my own, and ride the thing all over Brooklyn, sometimes into Manhattan too. I'm 81 years old now, and I never wore a helmet. There weren't any "back in the day". I did not ride on "bike paths" either, not that there were any, I rode on city streets. Of course, I also paid close attention to what was going on in my immediate vicinity, never "texting while driving". When I wanted to make a phone call I of course, "parked" my machine. How in blazes did I ever get to be this old absent the constant ministrations of what some describe as "the nanny state"?
