Some laptops have a "Fn" (or function) key which also needs to be pressed in order to activate the numberpad capability when no separate numberpad exists. If that fails, my only suggestion would be similar to Frank's: copy and paste the desired symbols into your text. You could try the link Frank posted...or, if you're using Windows, you can open the "Character Map" (just type "character" in the search bar), select a Unicode font and search for the character(s) you need. Fonts like "Arial Unicode MS" contain hundreds of symbols (like ♈ and ∛) and you can select and copy the ones you need all at once.
