And I can't help but giggle at the advice to (a) minimize weight as any sensible hiker should, but (b) to also never go into the woods without a "small pocket steel tape." Will def be sure to add a steel tape to my gear next time I hike the Muir Trail! ;-)

OR, carry one of those free tapemeasures from IKEA which weigh only 2.13 grams, 0.075 ounces, 0.0047 pounds, you'll hardly notice the extra weight in your backpack.
