Wayne,
Delightful article and oh, so very Porter, right down to his elegant illustrations. I can imagine him leading a handful of his mirror-grinding pals into the woods at Stellafane, twine, tape and hammer under his arm, to demo this!
And I can't help but giggle at the advice to (a) minimize weight as any sensible hiker should, but (b) to also never go into the woods without a "small pocket steel tape." Will def be sure to add a steel tape to my gear next time I hike the Muir Trail! ;-)
Definitely Porter at his Yankee best, and I certainly hope that someone has thought to demo this at a recent Stellafane gathering!
Thanks for sharing! -P
