These EDDY CURENTS flow in a direction to oppose the motion which produces the current. This yield a velocity dependent force, ie: damping. Check a college level general physics book and look for Lenz's law. Over simplistically stated as "The direction of an induced current is such as to oppose the cause (motion) producing it".
