Alex, I think what we now call the internet is just one of the networks that can be traced back into ARPANET, which was a military research net. Not quite fair to say "it" has become free and public, since there are still private networks (military and otherwise). I suspect that if all the public switches and routers went black, the military could still communicate on its own.We may have alternatives to "the" US military GPS net once the others all go live and (presumably) commercial, so maybe the analogy (one military 'thing' spawning mutliple non-military 'things') holds though.
