For my example, perhaps the altitude correction was 12 and it was reduced to 11 for index correction. This would seem to make sense.

There still is, however, the positive 7' correction that would be unaccounted for. Since the dip correction is negative that would not make sense. Where did this come from?

Thanks! If the navigator of the Charles W. Morgan was using a similar table, that would explain things nicely. However, on page 5 of the workbook, he uses a correction of 11' for an H_a of 27°31'. On he very next page, he uses a correction of 12' for an H_a of 26°06'. The only consistent thing he seems to have done was to use an 11' correction on every sight up until page 6. From then on he uses a 12' correction, regardless of the apparent altitude. Curious.
