Australia to New Zealand via kayak

Have you heard - some bloke is paddling an ocean kayak from Oz to NZ.
He plans to follow a track just to the south of 40 degrees, in the
    'Roaring Forties'.

We saw vision of the dude and his bright red sea kayak on TV
yesterday. To sleep he slides down inside it and closes a cover,
although he plans to spend most of his time paddling. As you would.
Although ocean kayaks often fly a small sail for downwind sailing
Andrew has, strangely enough, declined this option, although he can
expect to have the wind mostly behind him.

Most of his food and water will be in the forward compartment. To
access it he has to hop into the water. As he says about this
essential operation; "strictly in fine weather only". Guess he needs
to lose his appetite in typical 'Roaring Forties' weather.

    More on this at:

"My planned route across the Tasman is entirely below the 40th
parallel" [above 40 south] "from Tasmania to the south island of New
Zealand. The 'Roaring Forties' are challenging waters... "

    (These are sophisticated websites !)

Finally, did you know sea kayakers here have their own magazine ? To
be found within are photos of kayaks under sail. It reminds me of the
birth of sailing, when boats' primary means of propulsion was by oar
and a square sail was used when it could be (much to the relief of the
rowers). That basic model lasted with little change for over 3000
    years in the Mediterranean.

Oh, and Andrew will be carrying a GPS. He expects it to be useful.
