    Averaging Sextant Sights
    From: Paolo Borchetta

    Hi,
I'd like to exchange views on the best method for averaging sextant sights. The available literature is scarce. Personally I use the calculated slope method and then eye-ball the best fit of the calculated slope into the sights' data or, if the scatter is too large (a bad set of sights) I sometimes adjust the closest sight on to the reference slope, I have done some checks of the results of this method calculating the Ho and comparing it with Hc reducing the specific sight, sometime the values match, sometime the difference is in the range between 0.5' to as much as 5' or 6'. Comparing the data with the USNO site provided Hc the results show the same differences range.
    Any suggestion is much appreciated.
    Paolo
