How good and how reliable this best guess on your opinion? With Cook's observations in Point Venus I have an advantage of knowing their position very precisely, from comparing their large scale map, the modern map with the monument marked and Terraserver photos. So I am sort of certain to 0.5 mile, and it is very likely that I know the position to 0.2 mile, especially the longitude because the shore goes more or less N-S there and they surely observed near the shore:-) On the other hand, it is not unheard of that a shoreline could shift by a half of a mile during two centuries:-) Because of erosion or general change in sea level, or local lift of the ocean floor, or whatever. So far my study of their results shows that they seem to be much worse than expected... So I am looking for various types of explanations of this.
