Bill,
The problem of sidewise shake hadn't occurred to me! The sun-diameter experiment, with the sextant upright all the time, was poorly designed for catching such an effect. Both the Tamaya and Sno-T have features to control side shake, and I can't feel or see it in either sextant. But it wouldn't take much. I'm starting to think there's something to this backlash business.
