For a careful analysis of Baffin's observation you'll have to wait for other list members to respond. The only problem I see is the blunder you already mentioned: his saying the moon would come to the meridian "sooner that day than the day before." Saying "sooner" rather than "later" must have been a simple slip. He had to understand things correctly to get sixty and a half west from his data.
There are several reasons he couldn't expect decent results, one being that in his day moon predictions were fit only for determining the tides.
