    I've done that too using the midlatitude for best accuracy. We aviators use lambert conformal charts which use a conical projection and an approximately constant  scale between the standard parallels of 33 and 45 degrees north.     Actualy we old navs would use dividers on the latitude scale to measure distances.  Does that help?
