One of the things supposedly brought by Columbus to the idea of sailing west to reach China was his realization (brought on by working in Madeira for many years as a chart and rutter developer) the the trade winds blew from east to west at lower latitudes, but blew from west to east at higher latitudes and therefore he could not only have the lower latitude trade winds blow him to China, but by sailing north he could pick up tradewinds to bring him back to Europe.
If the Basque fished or whaled off Labrador, they would have had to also have this knowledge. Is there any evidence that they did??

I have the book Cod by Mark Kurlansky. It's a detailed history of that fishing industry and all influencing factors through the years.
The Basque Cod fishermen were also supposed to have visited North America on a regular basis before Columbus and supposedly there is a letter in the Columbus files from the Basque saying "We know where you got this idea."(to sail west).
