Not really. However Rollo Appleyard was commissioned to design an aeroplane version of the basic Battenberg idea for the RNAS in 1917. Sir Arthur Whitten Brown is reputed to have taken one on the Atlantic Crossing although it’s unclear if he used it. He didn’t have much in the way of PLs to make changes of heading from. The aircraft versions are easy to make. I knocked one together in a couple of weeks. They’re like a very crude Douglas but need a lot more imagination to use. I was going to try and get my analysis in the JoN, but what with CV19 etc, I’ve just never got round to writing it. They’re described quite well in a NACA Report.
I’m sure the RN will still have the proper RN notes for the maritime versions. DaveP
