A bowling ball shop, or trophy (plaque) engraving shop sometimes has special black "crayons" for filling in engraving. Similar to furniture touch-up crayons, which might also work. Not forever, but reasonably well perhaps, without causing any damage. I've also used a rapid-o-graph (fine pointed drafting pen with permanent drafting ink) to fill engraving but that's a bit more work. FWIW.
