Just saw a news note with a statistic for the recent Marion-Bermuda Race. For years I have cited this as an example of a "practical" (ahem) application of celestial navigation. You get a two percent time credit if you use celestial. They don't care about the method details, and you can use electronics to clear the sights. This year five out of thirty-five boats took that option. Figure five sights per day over four days. That's a grand total of 100 sights annually for celestial navigation in the racing world. I don't know of any other races that offer a celestial handicap.
