Sorry for a small tangent, but I've wondered along somewhat similar lines about putting an image intensifier on a sextant telescope to pick out dimmer stars. Yes, the navigational stars tend to be brighter to begin with but picking up any stars can be a challenge if unfavorable conditions exist. Sort of the opposite problem that Bill is looking to solve, but maybe with the same kind of optical path solution. I've spent a fair amount of time looking thru NODS and have always been fascinated by how many more stars are visible.
