The Bob James paper is a fun read and not off topic at all :) One of my latest compact calculating methods uses a simple photo copy of a Faber Castell slide rule with chart dividers to perform all the needed nautical calculations to reasonable precision except for calculated altitude of a celestial body (Hc). See the attached image that lives on a clip board. There is something extremely appealing to having a tool with no moving parts that can perform magic ;-) Very satisfying to my inner caveman nostalgic cravings.
