Carl,
While meandering around the web, I ran across the original photo you mentioned. I recognized it instantly from the StarStruck app. I, too, was curious as to why the app's creator chose to deface that shot and use it as an icon. Only thing I can think of is that s/he didn't want to be sued for using a copyrighted pic, so s/he changed it a little.
Regarding where it's from...I don't know except that it appears to be someone in the U.S. NAVY.
