In 1914 NZ was 11 1/2 hours ahead of GMT so LAN would have been sometime between 1200 and 1230 local time. Did Captain Norton really  do two ex-meridians five hours after LAN?

    Surely what matters is not the time since noon (when the sun was on the meridian), but the time since Sirius and Canopus were on the meridian.  I don't see a date in the report, but a modern almanac shows Sirius with SHA=258d32' and Canopus with SHA=263d55' -- not too far apart.  I think if the voyage was in mid-October, both would be near the meridian at 5:30 PM local time...
