Surely what matters is not the time since noon (when the sun was on the meridian), but the time since Sirius and Canopus were on the meridian. I don't see a date in the report, but a modern almanac shows Sirius with SHA=258d32' and Canopus with SHA=263d55' -- not too far apart. I think if the voyage was in mid-October, both would be near the meridian at 5:30 PM local time...
