My mental celestial plus a bit of help from ‘Navigator’ puts you hove-to close Nihoa Island, 23°03.6’N  161°55.3’W, west of Hawaii on Wednesday 4^th March 1942.  To get an exact position, I’d have to do some plotting.   I would say you’re hearing two Japanese Kawanishi H8K ‘Emily’ flying boats of Operation K, the second bombing attack on Pearl Harbour targeting the 1010ft Dock with 250lb bombs.  As it was the time of the full Moon, the Americans recognised this as a vulnerability period and were ready.  Poor weather in the target area meant the attack was a bit of a flop, but neither aircraft was intercepted.  The Aircraft approached on an ESE track from the French Frigate Islands where they’d refueled.  Their route took them very close to both Necker Is, 23°34.5N 164°42’W and Nihoa, which are real islands with cliffs, not shoals or atolls.  航海士デイブ
