I have just finished reading book which, imho, turned out to be quite a “sleeper”. Entitled “Sextant”, by David Barrie, and written around a transatlantic yacht passage in the 1970s, it introduces the reader to the great explorers of the 18th and 19th centuries. Included are, amongst others – Cook, Bougainville, La Perouse, Vancouver, and Flinders – some of whom I had log ago forgotten. He brings out the importance of “Lunars” to these men, as well as the advent of the Chronometer and the early difficulties experienced therewith. I found it a really good read and recommend it to us less sophisticated members of this List. It is available on Amazon.com new for about eight buck.
