To the best of my knowledge, translations of the works of Bessel into
    English do not exist.

Very few mathematical papers are translated into English from other European languages
(the demand is too small to justify them, that is to make this business profitable,
and generally professional mathematicians are supposed to be able to read
mathematical papers in principal European languages (which are German, French, Italian and Latin).

Those few translations which are available are frequently of poor quality; you can obtain this
kind of "translations" by Google Translate, or by more advanced programs.

    Alex.

Speaking of Latin, are there any English translations of Bessel's Latin works available?

And if anybody else is confused, Bessel produced two different refraction
tables. The one that appears in some versious of Bowditch is from 1818,
while the more complicated one Chauvenet preferred is from 1830. Chauvenet's
Spherical Astronomy published the 1818 and 1830 tables right next to each
other without mentioning they were unrelated...
