I have had good results bringing the Sun down to the horizon by just looking at the horizon through the horizon mirror from just underneath the scope (favorite technique when using an artificial horizon). This saves having to take the scope off then put it back on. Never liked looking directly at the filtered Sun with the sextant set at zero then trying to move the index arm down to the horizon while keeping the filtered Sun in the field of view.  Flipping the sextant upside down and bringing the horizon up to the body is a better option then flip back over for the timed observation.
