Bris Sextant Solar Filter

Some friends and I have been trying to construct Bris sextants. We've been attempting to shape some welding glass for the solar filter piece, but since it's tempered it shatters when we try to score and break it. Is there an alternative to tempered glass? Or maybe a better way to shape tempered glass?
