    Just a little bibliographical information:

The Brouscon tide tables are the subject of a detailed study by a frenchman:
    Dujardin - Troadec, Louis
Les Cartographes Bretons du Conquet. La Navigation en Images 1543 - 1650.
    Brest 1966

The Brouscon manual that supposedly belonged to Sir Francis Drake, then went
to the Pepys Library, was reprinted by Nottingham Court Press in 1980. It
contains an introduction and explanation by the late Derek Howse.

Derek Howse also published an article on "Some early tidal diagrams" in the
    "Mariner's Mirror", Vol. 79 (1993), 27 - 43, which may answer some of your
    questions.

D.Waters "The Rutters of the sea" (New Haven 1967), which deals with the
early french rutters has an appendix on circular tide tables.
