Bubble fluid - any difference in behavior between xylene and alcohol?

I am restoring an old A-12 for my step-father (that was originally owned by my step-grandfather, who was a navigator in the Pacific, stationed in Bouganville). I had to disassemble the bubble window because the glass was heavily hazed and needed cleaning from the inside (rumor has it he used gin). I refilled it with denatured alcohol, mostly because I could find it more easily in my garage. But the bubble seems to move slightly differently than my own A-12 (purchased from Bill Morris), which has xylene in the bubble chamber.
Do I attribute the differnce to the fluid? Or is it just some random difference in the surfaces of the bubble window?
