In all the discussion concerning used/older books I am somewhat surprised
that Mixter's Primer of Navigation has not been mentioned. This book was
always invaluable to me as when I was unable to understand Bowditch,
Dutton, or the like, while studying alone, reference to Mixter always
served to clarify the problem in more simple terms. Perhaps others
consider him to unimportant to mention, but he was ideal in many
respects.
Also thanks to Stacy for putting in print what some of us have always
known - when the USN wants a real navigator they all too frequently have
had to turn to Merchant Marine officers who had to do it all themselves,
every day year in and year out. This is not meant to discredit in any way
those naval officers who did specialize in navigation, i.e., Ageton,
Dreisenstok, etc., and provided us with very useful short tabular methods
- navigators don't generally, however, become Admirals.
