Hello: Thank you for your insightful thoughts! I am sure one could build a navigation aid along the lines you describe: using long tapes for the scales of slide-rules. I believe that is what you proposing, no? As a matter of fact, I have stacks of patents that propose just that. And I admit, it would be fun to build experimental slide-rules along these lines, including one for Bygrave-type calculations. Maybe, I will even do that some time. However, the original Bygrave seems a surprisingly elegant device in construction and use that it still attracts the attention of navigation aficionados.
