Are you sure you're out? One disadvantage of following NavList messages is that you see a broad spectrum of interests and approaches to celestial navigation, and they come at you in no particular order. That can be intimidating, but it's up to the interested celestial navigation enthusiast to ask questions! If you're not done yet, I highly recommend you focus on a few basic aspects of celestial navigation, most especially Noon Sun sights and also latitude by Polaris. These do not require much math background. Believe me, if you can add and subtract, you can do celestial navigation. And learning the basic sights, like Noon Sun, helps build some of that math familiarity that can lead to more fun later.
On the other hand, if you have made your decision, and you're happy with selling the sextant, that's perfectly understandable. Here in the NavList community, I would say that there aren't many buyers with deep pockets right now. I could be wrong, but I would bet that this is true. Most long-term navigation enthusiasts comment regularly that they "already have enough!" Meanwhile new navigators are leaning towards inexpensive instruments strictly for backup.
So what to do? My honest, careful recommendation is ebay. Setting up an ebay sale can be almost as hard as learning celestial navigation (but less math!) so I suggest you either find a friend or relative (you mentioned your son?) with some tech skills, or please feel free to ask for as much help and advice as you need here. Ebay buyers looking for high-end sextants are a good crowd, and you should be able to get good money for a C.Plath.
I hope that helps.
By the way, is it OK to add your email here so, if there are NavList potential buyers, they can contact you directly? You included your NavList code in your prior message. I edited that out since it doesn't work that way. Email me directly if you prefer: Frank@ReedNavigation.com.
