Hate to burst bubbles, but since a Mars mission (if government funded) would almost certainly be an international affair, we would be talking kilometers (as God intended).
Or if Mr. Musk has his way, and Space Ex beats NASA, we would also be talking metric.
But perhaps we could still retain a bit of nostalgia by trying to introduce the concept of a “Nautical Kilometer”. It’s exactly the same as a regular kilometer, of course - it just sounds better.
