    Hello:

I live in Escondido, Ca, and we often go to Warner Springs maybe 10 miles east. You can go up to Palomar on very nice hikes, and you can visit inside the dome and see the telescope and all. But its focus is entirely inaccessible to visitors. I've tried every which way one can think of, no way you will be able to look through the scope as a normal person.

What a shame! If they could make a small part of the time accessible to the public, I think it would give a big boost to Astronomy. A persistent - even increasing -  problem here is light pollution. If citizens could see and appreciate the negative results by seeing its detrimental effects personally they would be more tolerant of the yellow natrium lights in the communities close to Palomar.

The telescope might be a perfect machine. And it is physically close to perhaps a Million people. Yet for most of them it is a far away as those nebulae it is observing. So regrettable!

    H

Ironically, I lived in the shadow of Mt Palomar for a few years.  I could see it from my front yard.  I was on the Riverside County side of things, so it was a better than hour drive to actually get up there to visit.
