On Saturday 1/9/10 Frank Reed and the Southern California Guys (Gary Lapook, Mike Burkes, and Greg Rudzinski) successfully performed Bubble sextant Sun observations through a partly cloudy sky while flying over the Southern California coast in a Cessna 172 Piloted by Gary Lapook. Intercepts were from 8 to 20 nautical miles from GPS. The bubble sextant's bubble moves more than expected with the averager observations producing the better intercepts over individual observations. Unfortunately the Moon was obscured by clouds so no inflight fixes were obtained. It was possible to observe the Sun from the back seat looking forward between the Pilot and Copilot seats as well as through the sloping back window of the Cessna. I rate the experience an A+ as a first timer on a single engine aircraft.
