    No, I think it is useful for identifying stars for observation just like the 2102-D. In some ways it is not as convient and in other ways it is more convenient. One disadvantae is not having a grid for plotting planents but that is easily solved by just drawing a circle to represent the eclyptic so then you only have to reverse the process to determine the LHA of the planet and then plot that LHA on the eclyptic since that is where you find solar system objects. JUst set your drawing compass to the radius of the equator on the device and then offset the center point of the drawing compass by 23 degrees and then draw the eclyptic which plots as a circle on this projection.I had modified my 2102-D like this.
