    When sailing a GC route we made very little use of waypoints.  At each fix or updated EP a new initial course to our destination was calculated using azimuth (ABC) or sight reduction tables and course altered accordingly, using a normal gyro compass.  None of this at very high latitudes and always at ship speeds.  Small scale gnomonic charts were useful for a visual appreciation of the location of the vertices.
