    You're right, George. I should have said "Vertical circle," not "vertical
    line."
    
    As to how to get the data from the Almanac to calculate the altitudes when
    GMT is uncertain, it's pretty much as you've put it in your last paragraph,
    or as I put it some months back in an "It works" posting. Perhaps later today
    I'll explain a way of doing it that will be more easily understood by modern
    navigators. It's not such heavy going as you'd suppose. I've used it a number
    of times and it's easy.
