    Calculating Ha from Hc
    From: Sean C
    Date: 2014 Mar 26, 00:41 -0700

    All:

I have devised the following method for "reverse engineering" parallax in altitude:

    HP*cos(Hc)=A

    Hc-A=B

    HP*cos(B)=C

    B+C=D

    D-Hc=E

    B-E≈H

    ...and of course, HP*cos(H)=PA

In my calculations, I have found that refraction (and thus Ha) can be reasonably estimated directly. It has been stated that, in terms of lunars, getting the altitudes exactly right is not crucial. However, after comparing my calculations of a recent lunar to the results from Frank's online calculator and also interpolating the "observed time" myself, I found that it does matter...however little. I would be interested in everyone's thoughts. (I followed Frank's "Easy Lunars" instructions for my own calculations.)

    Thanks!
    Sean C.

    P.S.

Frank, I know I said before that there was nothing about the "Easy Lunars" page that needed updating, but I've changed my mind. The white text on a black background is a little hard on the eyes. When I look away from my laptop screen, I see lines everywhere. ;)
