Dear Steve, thank you for your trust in me!
I'm not an authoritative source on CN, I'm just an enthusiast and a student of it.
What I know for sure - all the data in an almanac is intended to be used for the linear interpolation of the values between the tabulated ones. The "method" I used to solve your question is just one of many available ways. It is easier if you have a pocket calculator but also doable with a pencil and paper.
To tell you more about the other - "the official" - way, involving the v and d coefficients I must be sure we are looking at the same Almanac. Is this one what you use? I prefer the other brand of almanacs.
I will be glad to answer any your question - it helps me to see CN problems more clear. :)
Warm regards,
Tony
