Call for Papers: History of navigation conference, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, 2018
    From: UNK
    Date: 2017 Oct 23, 03:26 -0700

    Dear NavListers

Continuing our well-respected series of conferences, Royal Museums Greenwich and the Royal Institute of Navigation are holding another event to bring together current research into the history of navigation.

    Navigation, Heroism, History
National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, 24-25 May 2018

In the 250th anniversary year of James Cook's departure in command of the Endeavour on the first of three famous voyages of exploration, this conference seeks to interrogate the way stories are told about heroism in the history of navigation, including land, sea, air and space.

Suggested areas for discussion might include, but need not be restricted to:

    • the construction of navigational heroism
    • alternative perspectives on the existing canon
    • gender and the heroic
    • new tales of navigational heroism

Proposals for papers on these or related themes are now being invited. It is anticipated that speaking slots will be of maximum 25 minutes, including time for questions.

To propose a paper, or for further information, please send the title and abstract (approximately 200 words) by 15 December 2017 to:
